Sleep Apnoea Surgery Works, Says Expert

A leading doctor has rejected a university study claiming there is no clear benefit in having surgery for sleep apnoea. University of Adelaide researchers argue surgery for sleep apnoea has a general lack of impact on symptoms.

Sleep apnoea, which affects about one in four people, is caused by the collapse of the upper airways during sleep, leading to loud snoring and sometimes a temporary halt in breathing.

The researchers said in this week’s British Medical Journal that when improvements were noted after surgery, they were rarely sustained beyond 12 months.

University of Adelaide lecturer Adam Elshaug said he wanted the surgery restricted to clinical trials. But Australia’s most experienced reconstructive upper airway surgeon, Sam Robinson, rejected the university research. Adelaide-based Dr Robinson said the surgery had been proven as an effective treatment when non-invasive therapies failed.

The procedure involves surgery to tissue in the nose, tongue and soft palate. “This surgery can improve lives and it can save lives,” Dr Robinson said.

“We must not restrict valuable and proven surgery to clinical trials that would deny appropriate treatment to hundreds upon hundreds of sufferers – this would threaten patient welfare and compromise the medical profession’s capacity to treat people who suffer sleep apnoea.”

Dr Robinson has reconstructed the airways of more than 500 sleep apnoea sufferers in the past decade. He said up to 90 per cent of people remained undiagnosed for sleep apnoea and suffered effects including fragmented sleep, morning headaches, increased heart rates and daytime sleepiness.

Study says lack of sleep could lead to diabetes

A new study from researchers at the University of Chicago claims lack of good sleep can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. The research indicates volunteers who were sleep deprived experienced a 25 percent decrease in the insulin sensitivity.

Sarah Taylor is a physical activity coordinator with the Iowa Department of Public Health. She says the study reinforces the idea that sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Most sleep experts recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.

According to a national poll, 40% of American adults report getting less than 7 hours of sleep a night on weekdays. Taylor says there are many steps you can take to ensure a good night’s sleep. She suggests eating right and getting plenty of exercise, while avoiding caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol.

Stop student killings by allowing some guns on campus

What a sad country the United States has become when we have to discuss ways to stop killings at schools. The biggest problem is that if we don’t find a way to stop the shootings, the level of education for the future is going to result in a population with lower intelligence.

I get my college education from the University of Phoenix. I chose distant education for one reason, it is safer. The worse thing that can happen to me is I will fall asleep while studying late at night and fall off my chair.

Let’s face it, we need armed guards at and around our schools, just like we have at airports. The truth is these killings are acts of terrorism and they are instilling terror on the thousands of campuses across the United States.

It’s illegal for people to carry a loaded gun in most states. I live in Wisconsin, I can not carry a loaded or concealed weapon. I carry mace. I may not be able to stop someone from getting shoot but I will be able to slow the shooter down and possibly save some lives.

Why do I carry mace if I don’t attend an on ground campus? Because shopping malls and any other public domain is not safe anymore either. I also carry an extra cellphone with me that has a video camera. I keep it charged up and have the buttons set to make it simple to turn it on.

I live in a rural area, I can only imagine what it must be like to live in a city.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, I left in 1990 when the suburbs started getting just as much crime activity as the city of Chicago itself. Out of fear for my children’s safety, we moved 300 miles north into the northland woods of Wisconsin.

My 2 sons graduated high school last year. They have decided not to go to college, they will take distant learning classes. I fear for my grandchildren, what will those babies face 10 years from now when they are in high school? My daughter and her husband both have to work, homeschooling is not an option if they want to keep their home and their bills paid.

How can you teach your children to look forward to going to school to learn new and exciting things and discover the world around them if they have to wonder why there is a man with a gun standing outside the classroom?

Grizzly: Memoirs of a Great Cat

I remember hearing stories from my sister, Mandy, about the time she first got Grizzly. Her and her husband, Rob, had rescued him as a kitten, but he immediately scratched Rob, who lost patience quickly. He was going to return that stubborn kitten, but my sister softened him up. They kept that crazy cat, and he grew to be a beautiful animalstill as mean as the day they got him!


Grizzly was a beautiful, slick black cat with a slim physique. He had frightening, green eyes and very silky fur. His pure dislike for me may have been clear, but that cat loved my sister very much, and it showed. She was his friend, his motherthat odd creature who served him.

One of my best, and most painful, memories of Grizzly happened one night my younger sister, Lindy, and I were staying the night at Mandy’s. Mandy was sleeping, and Lindy and I were watching television in her room. I was lying with my head at the foot of her bed, my feet on the pillows. Lindy was sitting on the floor by the foot of the bed, and, unknowing to me, Grizzly was sleeping to my right, at Mandy’s feet. Well, Lindy and I were laughing at something on TV, but we were trying to be quiet. I turned around to make sure that we weren’t waking Mandy up, but before I could turn my face all the way Grizzly lashed out and slapped me across the face, I actually heard my skin rip.

I whipped my head back around, covering my mouth with my hands. Lindy was laughing, but then she saw blood pooling from my face into my hand. Then, Mandy stirred, sat up a little, and showed her sincere concern. “Why are you guys being weird?” Were her exact words, I believe. Then she went right back to sleep. I hurried out of the room. Lindy in tow. We went to the guest bathroom and there was blood covering my teeth, lips, chin and hands. I cleaned myself up, threw the bloody tissue into the garbage, and then had a few minutes of fun making the gash in my lip “talk.”

The next morning Mandy and Rob were up when I got downstairs, and the first thing they said to me was something to the effect of, “let me see what he did.” I told them what happened and Mandy said she knew because she saw all the bloody Kleenix in the garbage. A earned a nickname because of the scar he left in my lip, which, thankfully has disappeared by now. I’m able to laugh at this now, it actually is pretty funny, even though that was his first true attack on me, and it was a whopper!


Another memory of Grizzly didn’t end in bodily harm, but it did contain sheer terror. I was sleeping in the guest room at Mandy’s house, and I don’t know why, but I was awoken in the middle of the night. The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was Grizzly, just standing over me, staring at me. I didn’t move, I lay frozen in fear! Thankfully he decided to spare my life that night.

But no matter what memories I carry away from my time with Grizzly, I could never stop seeing his beauty, and his special love for one human being, my sister, his friend, Mandy.

Reflections: Sleep

Sleep, won’t you come and take me away? Take me away to the Land of Nod? The Land of Nod where the grass is green and the sky is blue, birds sing, butterflies flutter, lamb bleat, crickets cricket, trees stand colourful and tall and fences are well kept.

Sleep is like a drop of happiness in a sea of troubles. It erases reality, taking with it any issues, problems, complications, worries.

Ok, so sleep isn’t all about candyfloss. I know first-hand that if you are worried about something, this is reflected in your dreams, through a dragon chasing you or falling off the edge of a kerb perhaps. Besides, sleep serves a serious function: to keep us awake.

All humans and animals need sleep. Without sleep, we stop being able to function properly.

I carried out a little experiment with a friend whilst at university, to see how long we could go without sleep. It wasn’t the most scientific of experiments and basically consisted or me and my friend staying awake for two nights, through sheer determination and a deranged sense of purpose. A lot of tea was consumed, and the odd bit of coffee although less so in my case as this tends to make my head feel six feet above my shoulders. Not helpful, particularly when you have had no sleep. I remember the first day and night was fine, and even the second day – I’m sure many of us have pulled an all-nighter at some point due to study, work or fun commitments. We humans are tough, and this poses few challenges on us other than tiredness and feeling drained. Going into the second night was hard, and we had to keep taking ourselves out for walks in the freezing November air just to stay awake. Things start to shift, blur a little at the edges, speech becomes harder and you struggle not to slur. It reminded me of the aftermath of a heavy night out! By the third morning, we were starting to be in trouble and decided we had performed our duty to science.

I obviously would not recommend anyone tries to stay awake longer than necessary. Not least, because it can be very dangerous – we have all heard stories of people causing accidents as a result of driving after insufficient sleep; and on a less serious note, we know a lack of sleep means we are unable to think so clearly or behave so rationally.

Humans need sleep. It recharges our batteries. It ensures we are awake when we are awake. It makes us feel alive. It keeps us sane.

And on that note, I best go and find some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
