Bruxism causes – Part 12
The first signs of Bruxism may be when you find yourself grinding your teeth in the middle of the day. Or possibly you have to resist the urge to chew your fingernails. If you notice these symptoms during the daytime, then there’s a good chance you are grinding your teeth at night as well.
Bruxism is the technical term for the grinding and clenching of teeth.
It’s surprising that over half of adults over 25 suffer from this condition. For one in five people, the results can be destructive. With no food to cushion the force of teeth grinding against one another, they are easily damaged. Teeth can be cracked or chipped, and sometimes, in more serious cases, teeth are worn down to the gum-line.
Bruxism is most often caused by emotional problems. Possibly, there is a lot of stress at work. With emotions working overtime the stress is often carried over into the sleep phase.
Anxiety and pain are also common causes. When the body is fighting overtime to deal with pain, it causes physical and emotional stress and if often the underlying cause of Bruxism.
Sleep disorders can cause Bruxism, as can having an aggressive or competitive personality.
If teeth grinding occurs while using certain medications, a doctor should be consulted, as often it is a side effect Of the prescription being used.
Often a sore jaw or headaches will be morning warning signs that you may be suffering from Bruxism. Also, the teeth grinding could awaken a spouse who will witness what is happening.
Once it’s established that a person is grinding their teeth, talking to a medical professional as soon as possible is very important to prevent any permanent physical damage to the teeth or jaw.
